Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education

At Hackbridge Primary School, we understand the importance of children developing into well-rounded citizens of the world. Throughout their time at Hackbridge Primary School, children will learn about themselves (Me), those around them (We) and the wider community (Us) through our PSHE curriculum. As well as this, our PSHE curriculum aims to provide all pupils with the skills needed to lead full and happy lives during their time at Hackbridge Primary School and beyond. We explicitly teach content to children, to support our focus on safeguarding, and empower them with knowledge and skills to become valued members of society.

We aim for children to develop core understanding and skills at forming and maintaining a range of healthy relationships, in person and online, and know when and how they can ask for help. We also want children to be armed with a wide knowledge base of practical ways that they can keep themselves physically and mentally safe and healthy and what to do if they have any concerns about theirs or others’ physical or mental health.

In addition to meeting the statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education, we also aim for children to have broader knowledge and skills for a successful life as part of their local, national and international communities through a range of lessons on citizenship, environmental issues and finances.

Sitting alongside our PSHE, we teach the children about Online Safety in line with the UK Council for Internet Safety’s 'Education for a Connected World' (2020): “As they grow older, it is crucial that they learn to balance the benefits offered by technology with a critical awareness of their own and other’s online behaviour and develop effective strategies for staying safe and making a positive contribution online.” This is achieved through teaching the themes of: self-image and identity; online relationships; online reputation; online bullying; managing online information;  health, wellbeing and lifestyle; privacy and security; copyright and ownership. Each year group, from the Early Years to Year 6, learn essential skills, knowledge and understanding about the online safety themes at an age-appropriate level.

PSHE can include sensitive topics and we want to ensure that parents and carers are fully informed of the content and approach that we take to these lessons at Hackbridge Primary School. Please see the documents at the bottom of this page for more detail.

If you have any further questions, please speak to your child's class teacher or the PSHE Team (Miss Mathis, Mr Bird & Mr Brown) who lead on PSHE across the school.
